Set in the village of Orkney Springs, near Bryce Mountain, Shrine Mont is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. This scenic conference center and retreat features the circa-1873 Virginia House (originally the Orkney Springs Hotel); Maryland House, built in the early 1850s; and other cottages and camp facilities. Shrine Mont is also acclaimed for the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, an open-air cathedral consecrated in 1925.
Each year during the first weekend in June, parishioners and friends from St. Francis and St. John's of McLean visit Shrine Mont for a special gathering that has taken place for many decades. The weekend begins with the "Shrine Mont Band" welcoming guests to the front porch of the Virginia House. Children find themselves right at home and quickly make new friends as they run and play on the generous lawns and open fields, enjoying a weekend of games, crafts, hayrides, an ice cream social, a parade, dancing, a bonfire, fishing, hiking, and performances during the Saturday night talent show.
Buffet-style meals are served in the Virginia House. Activities also include a golf and tennis tournament, softball, a hike up the mountain, and relaxing on the porch. A Sunday morning service is held in the beautiful outdoor cathedral. Shrine Mont has become a family tradition, enjoyed by generations of families from St. Francis and St. John's. Join us!
