Rev. David Lucey – Rector
Born and reared in Virginia, David came to the St. Francis Episcopal Church and his calling to Holy Orders after a round-about journey as an adult. His life before ministry includes studying economics at Hampden-Sydney College, business management at the Babcock School of Management at Wake Forest University, and fifteen years working in financial services, primarily at BNY/Mellon in Manhattan.
One of the many joyous experiences of his early professional life was meeting Katherine Vivian Harmer, also a banker, while both worked in Atlanta. They married in 1987 and have five children: Colbert who met his wife Victoria while he was at Hampden-Sydney and she was at Sweetbriar (so cliché)—they have a daughter Genevieve and live in Detroit; Carolyn, a Columbia grad who is teaching high school English in the Bronx; Diana, soon to be married to Griffin, whom she met at Washington College and is working in Northern Virginia as an accountant; George, working to get his start in the hospitality industry as a chef; and Virginia Lee (Ginny) a college student studying creative writing and the environment with hopes of writing about the subject as a profession. Katherine is the CEO and founder of Solar Sister, a qualified 501c3 dedicated to the economic empowerment of women through Avon-style distribution of solar lanterns and high efficiency cook stoves in Tanzania, and Nigeria.
While in New York City, David’s experiences in the community of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church renewed his understanding of a calling to ordained ministry and in 1996 he left banking, matriculated at the General Theological Seminary, the oldest Episcopal Seminary in the United States, and began his journey in the church. He has served as an assistant at St. Matthew’s Church, in Bedford, New York and Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Illinois. He has also served as a rector in Northeast Harbor, Maine and in Bristol, Rhode Island. Among other ministries he was devoted to in Rhode Island, he served as the Chairman of the Diocesan Budget Committee for five years as the diocese navigated the vagaries of the recession of 2008 and the challenges of calling a new Bishop. He is currently active as the Convener of the local ecumenical group, the Great Falls Area Ministry (GFAM) and was elected by the North Fairfax Region of the Diocese of Virginia to serve on the Executive Board of the diocese with a specialty in the Budget Committee.
In his spare time, David is an avid follower of the Boston Red Sox, a taste inherited from his father, who grew up in the Boston area, and was refined while serving parishes in Maine and Rhode Island. He is also a voracious reader of history, fantasy, and classical science fiction. He loves outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, and bicycling.
